Sherburn (25 miles), started 9.30am City Square
Steven S stepped in to cover for Jon F who was ill. Nine of us met by the Black Prince statue.
Storm and Zig-zag The bridge over the Aire at Bridgewater Place was closed due to the stormy conditions so we crossed at Crown Point bridge instead. Then after re-crossing by the glass factory we used our favourite little zig-zag link to get up to Cross Green.
Tunnel to Garforth After Halton we used Manston Lane to get through the tunnel under the M1. Around the M1/A1 roundabout is a cycle path to make things easy.
Don’t Pay We stopped for tea and to see pretty Lotherton Hall. Brian B called in to see us while doing his local loop. Tip – ignore the entrance barrier. Lotherton and LCC have an agreement whereby a group of us can go straight to the café without paying the entrance fee.
Wind Problem The mile from Sherburn to Squires was very nasty, maybe the strongest headwind some of us have experienced.
Leather People No pretensions in Squires Café, most people here were bikers in leathers enjoying the high-carb menu. See photos of the biking exhibits, including chopper with a little engine attached.
The Lines We joined this old railway line now a nice path at Kippax to go up to Garforth.
Wet End We returned by the Garforth cycle route over the motorway and by Colton, fortunately the evil wind had calmed down but there was a little rain. The new incinerator and wind turbine make Cross Green interesting now.
